Boxing Effectiveness in MMA

MMA and Boxing

Boxing is undoubtedly widely used in MMA as a stand-up discipline. Why is being utilized by many mixed martial arts fighters out there? The answer is effectiveness.

Boxing is one of the lethal mixed martial arts techniques. Where do you think the fight starts? It is obviously in standing up and not in the ground. As fight a start standing this is where boxing is so dangerous with just one strike a MMA fighter could be put into sleep.

Boxing is very effective as a striking discipline in MMA because a punch lands faster than a kick. I have seen great muay thai and kick boxing fighters that have been knock out before they could make a powerful kick. I think it also depends on how skill boxers are.

I’m not saying boxing is the only one effective striking martial arts out there, what I’m saying is the effectiveness of boxing in MMA. If this not an effective and practical technique in striking, why do MMA fighters train for boxing? All mixed martial arts discipline are very important in this sport but surely boxing is one of them.

What also great about boxing is the footwork. Boxing is said to be a dance. In MMA, footwork is very important. Footwork will help mixed martial arts fighter to evade punches, kicks and take downs. Footwork is a great defensive skill.

I have seen MMA fighter even they are jiu jitsu black belts choose to stand up and box. Take a look at Junior Dos Santos. He is a jiu jitsu black right? Who is the UFC heavy weight champ? Boxing lead many MMA fighters to greatness.

Some people say if you have a good take down defense, you would be successful in boxing. I believe that because there are great MMA fighters that I rarely seen on the ground like Chuck Liddell and succeeded in MMA.

Boxing will never be taken out as a lethal striking arsenal in MMA. Many MMA fighters have succeeded in this sport by using boxing as their stand up game. Every MMA fighter should have boxing in their striking ammunition's because thus is one of the most effective striking discipline in MMA or any martial arts.

How to Improve Your Cardio for MMA

MMA tips to increase your cardio

Cardio is very important in all sports most especially in MMA. Even you do mixed martial arts for fitness, without cardio you would not perform all of its drills. Mixed martial arts is one the most physically exhaustive sports and very physically challenging as well.

For you to perform all the drill and exercises of MMA you need to be very well physically conditioned and one aspect of it is your cardio. This is the reason why you need to be ready with your oxygen tank before you try to do mixed martial arts. Without a good cardio there is a big possibility that you could vomit because you are gassing out.

Before you begin with your training it is advisable for you to be well conditioned first. You need to be willing enough to train because it will require you a lot of effort and determination. If you are too lazy to stretch some muscle this sport is not for you.

How to increase your cardio before you jump for your MMA training is simple but it will need more of your willingness and drive without it you will not progress. If you are willing enough here are the simple tips from my experience how to prepare your lung to train for mixed martial arts. As what I have said it is very easy. The key here is your desire to train. My suggestion is that you need to prepare at least for one month before you wear your MMA gear for gym.

Jog

If you never ran before, you should try to jog first. Jog at least 15 – 20 minutes a day. Do this at least once a week until you are accustomed to it. If you can run straight 15 minutes have a break but don’t take it too long. Rest for 1-2 minutes then jog again. After doing this for a week, it doesn’t mean that you are ready for mixed MMA yet because this is not enough.

Run

After a week of jogging, you lungs now are beginning to adjust. You lungs now should have improved its lungs capacity but it is not enough for MMA training yet this is the reason why you need to try to run now instead of jogging.

Running will require great lung capacity but because you have jogged for a week, I assume that you are now ready to do this. Cardio capacity differs from one person to another but 1 week of jog is the ideal time for you to be prepared to run. In MMA there are activities and drill that will need a lot of air from you and even endurance.

Sprint

Sprinting is for sudden blast and explosive move for MMA. This is why sprinting is very important. There a difference from these three cardio exercises. Jog is just for preparation, running is for you to have a gas reserve and sprinting is for sudden burst of action such as shooting for a takedown.

After doing jog for one week and running for one week. Sprinting should be incorporate with running. This is how I do it. I run for 5 minutes first. After I have warmed up enough that is by running, I sprint for 1- 2 minutes, and then run again. The only rest for you here is run. Then after you are ready again after a five minutes run, sprint again for 3 minutes.

This just an idea for what you can do with running and sprinting. This is my program. If you wish to do your own it is ok for as long you combine the two.

Jogging, running and sprinting are simple and most effective way to increase your cardio in preparation for you MMA training. It is easy buy will require you a sheer of determination. Follow this format and you will be prepared the hardest mixed martial arts drills.

How to learn MMA online

Learning MMA at the comfort of your home through the internet or online

MMA is getting popular nowadays not only as a sport and entertainment but as for physical fitness and self defense as well. However, for some they have no time or money to go the gym and enroll for MMA classes. But I believe in the saying “if there is a will, there is a way”. Yes! There is a solution to this concern by learning mixed martial arts at home.

Learning mixed martial arts at home is an excellent option for those who want to learn this sport but how? Today, because of the internet, information and anything you want to ask, Google has it. So, if want to learn MMA at home, it is very possible.

However, there are limitations if you choose to learn MMA at home. If you just want to learn and get fit this is a good choice. However, if want to learn to fight, it is the downside of it. There is no one around that you could spar with if you learn MMA at home. If you want to learn how to fight, home training for MMA is not for it.

So you are asking how would you learn MMA using the internet? First, if you have a budget, you could purchase online courses for MMA or you could buy instructional mixed martial arts DVDs. Make sure to choose credible websites only. There are a lot of scam bags in the internet.

If you are asking where to purchase MMA instructional dvd’s try amazon, ebay and a lot more. Only buy  MMA videos anchored by pro mixed martial arts fighters if want to learn fast because a true pro MMA fighters have a well tested technique that was already applied in real combat.

There are lot of MMA instructional videos out there that are from popular mixed martial arts fighters from the UFC or other MMA organization. Choose only the videos from MMA champions. I heard this saying “if want to be a champion train like a champion”. Only purchase DVD’s of mixed MMA.

Second, if you don’t have a budget that is not a problem. There are tons of MMA instructional videos from the internet. YouTube is one of them. I have used YouTube many times if i wanted to learn something about MMA. The best part of it is that you could also look for instructional videos that are being led by MMA champions and veterans as well. Give it a try.

When you find a useful video, download and save it. You will surely not learn MMA with a glimpse. You need to repeat the videos over and over again until it sinks in. But watching is not enough, you need to act and follow the MMA drills that are being instructed.

Now you have all the resources to learn MMA, the next move for you to do is act. If you really want to learn MMA or any sports, you have to be very disciplined. Laziness is your worst enemy here. You need to have lots of self motivation to learn MMA at home because there are no trainers behind you to support and motivate you.

Practice the drill regularly and diligently. For the grappling techniques like wrestling and jiu jitsu try the moves and drill with a friend who is willing to do it with you. As what I have mentioned there is a downside of learning MMA online and at home especially when you learn grappling because these are the martial arts that need a sparring partner.

MMA is a great sports for fitness and self defense. Learning mixed martial arts from home is a good idea if only you wish to learn it for fitness and get some ideas how utilize some MMA techniques.

What are the gears for MMA Training?

MMA Gears

MMA is undoubtedly the fastest rising sport and many are now encourage to do MMA not to become amateur or professional fighters but as for fitness and well being. For those who are starting up or want to do MMA and don’t know what to use and to buy for their gears here are some of the most practical apparatus that you can purchase without spending too much.

Mouth Guards
This is only necessary if you want to spar. There is no need to buy this kind of protection if you don’t wish to try or to feel the actual MMA fight. In case you don’t know what is the purpose of mouth gear. A mouth piece or a mouth guard is like a denture and protective plastic that is place under your upper teeth.

It’s to protect your teeth and most especially your jaw. Many people don’t know that the main purpose of a mouth guard is to protect your jaw from breaking if ever you got hit in the face particular on your jaw. However, in sparring you are well protected if ever you want to try it. But I’m not saying that you will not get dizzy if you get hit in the head during you MMA sparring sessions.

In addition, mouth guards now are customisable. You can choose in different colors and design. Some of they are very cool as you see on mixed martial arts fighters.

Gloves

Actually you have a choice to choose and MMA gloves or boxing gloves. However, with boxing gloves you can’t grapple obliviously. If you want to have both it is better and one would do. But I advise you to have both.
The reason is that in when training for boxing, bigger gloves are much safer than using the MMA gloves. So better to have them both gloves, one for boxing and for MMA.

Size of you boxing or mixed martial gloves should be 14 oz or 16 oz. The reason for that is the bigger the size the safer your wrists are. Buy the high quality ones if you wish to do mixed martial arts for a long time because if you buy the less quality gloves it will tear up immediately. High quality boxing and MMA gloves might be a little expensive but you will safe more in the long run.

Punching Bags

Punching bags are highly useful in MMA. It is where you develop the power of your punches especially when you are punching on the heavy bags. However, if you go to do gym regularly, there is no need for to buy one because some of them are too expensive. You can improvise one if want and it easy to do and to set up

Shoes

Any rubber shoes will do. But what I have observed is that many mixed martial arts use running or crossover shoes. Maybe there is logic behind that. It is comfortable and when you need to run or sprint it would be perfect for that. In mixed martial arts cardio play a very important role in your conditioning and you would run a lot. This might be the reason why MMA fighter use running or crossover shoes.

Mixed Martial Arts shorts

If you want to look like a MMA fighter there are shorts specifically for it but they cost a little. However, if you prefer buying the superior brands, it is your choice. For me, for as long my shorts are comfortable and stretchable I don’t care how I look like. I’m a practical person when it comes to this. Board shorts, soccer shorts, or anything will but not the ones for running. Don’t choose the short shorts please. If you know what I mean.

T- Shirts

Anything will do for as long it is stretchable  and soft. Cotton shirts would be perfect but if you really want to look like a fighter there are many mixed martial shirts that rocks and I love them too, so much.

These are the basic gears that you need to have when you start you mixed martial arts training. Mixed martial art is a good choice for fitness and self defense. I highly recommend MMA for everyone especially for women.

Grappling Technique in MMA

Mixed Martial Arts training on Grappling

Jiu-jitsu is one of the most effective grappling technique in mma

MMA training is very important because MMA use many techniques from different martial arts discipline, and one foundation of mma is grappling. Mixed martial arts training will never disregard ground fighting as a part of this sport. This plays an important part to win fight and knowing to defend a fighter against other grapplers.

Grappling is a physical combat between two opponents where in; they should take down an opponent to take them to the ground and make a move to submit by locks and chokes or by ground and pound. Mastering these styles will take some time, and your MMA training will help you learn these powerful martial arts.

The common disciplines used in grappling are wrestling, judo, sambo, and Brazilian Jiu jitsu. Your ability to use this technique in the right timing and situation will put you ahead of your fellow combatant, whether you are still standing up or on the ground. During your MMA training, you will take part on sparring sessions that will help you to familiarize the actual feel of a battle.

With your regular MMA training, you will learn different strategies like taking down an opponent, submissions while standing and a lot more because there are numbers of variations and other complicated submission moves. However, as you progress, you will begin to discover the beauty of the art. To give you some idea, here are the different grappling techniques utilize in Mixed Martial Arts and practiced when you begin your MMA training.

Clinching is a common and basic grappling move, especially when standing this includes the moves like the bear hug, over the hook, under hook and others. This is where you start to take down an opponent and clinching is very important to master, for you to control your opponent before taking him down. You will learn more about these basic clinching maneuvers if you let yourself involve in MMAtraining.

When you control your opponent with a clinch standing up, you have a greater chance of taking him down. Takedown is a technique to put down an opponent to the ground. You can also take down an opponent by directly shooting for the legs with a single leg or double leg takedown. Your MMA training will improve your take down skills by letting you spar with good grapplers. This is not easy as you think because when you shoot with a good grappler chances are you will be shut down. That is why repeated drills are important for you to master all of these grappling skills.

On the ground battle, control is very important because if you can’t control an opponent on the ground, you are vulnerable to counter or reverse tactics that your opponent is waiting to impose due to the lack of ground control. Pinning is essential to master because you need to prevent your opponent from escaping while beating him up while you are on top. This is what you call the ground and pound. In your MMA training, you will be taught to have a stronger upper body because it will demand you a great amount of strength.

Submission is one of the lethal moves in MMA. This is a dangerous technique because you can injure your opponent by breaking a bone by a single attack. You can also use submission moves to put your opponent to sleep if they do not tap. Chokes and locks are the popular submissions utilize in MMA.

In the defense aspect of grappling, escapes and counters are not counted out. This is as important to other grappling moves mentioned above. Because if you don’t have this skill, you will end up tapping out especially when face a good grappler, and you will get caught by their attack. Grappling is like a chess match; you need to think before you move because you can be countered or the other way around. To be a complete fighter you need to be good not on striking alone but with MMA grappling as well.

For some grappling is a boring match to watch but when you start your MMA training in grappling with you will begin to appreciate the beauty of it. This is one of the most lethal weapons of mma that is why this is never disregarded from this combat sport.

Reasons Why Weight Training Is Important in MMA

MMA and Weight Training Advantage

Why weight training is important in MMA? Mixed Martial Arts is a physically demanding sport. You need to be in perfect shape to be able to train well and to last fights. As for pro mma fighters being in tipped top condition is a must because without this you will not even finish a 1-minute fight. One way of being in good shape in sports, especially MMA is weight training.
Weight training will develop punching power. There are specific programs for improving your knockout ratio with your lead hand or for power jabs. If you are not naturally gifted having a punching power, don't worry because there are weight training techniques to improve and maximize it. If you want to enhance your punches, weight training is there to help.
Not everyone one knows that striking power comes from the legs and proper stance. This is science at its best and there is a fight science actually. To have a stronger base, you need to work out on your legs. Weight training will definitely be a great help.
Have you tried punching a heavy bag for one hour or more? As you go further, your power diminishes and will exhaust your muscles. With weight training, this will improve and will develop endurance while maintaining your power with both hands. This will also help ground fighters too, because on the ground will require more used of muscles compared to stand up.
For wrestlers, weight training will boost the takedown assaults and takedown defense as well. Most wrestlers frequently lift weights because grapplers spend most of the time on the ground. As I have mentioned ground fighting is much physically demanding than stand-up combat.

On the first few days in training for MMA, you will notice that it is hard for you to catch up on the drills especially in boxing or muay thai. Training with mitts at first, will catch you off timing and balance. This is normal because your brain is not yet accustomed with it, but as you go along you will eventually get the rhythm and timing that you want. Just continue training MMA and as you progress through you will notice that you are developing power and speed because you will learn balance and proper form.
